A Healthy Roof: Asphalt Shingle Repair
There are many reasons, both weather related and otherwise, that might require you to do a little bit of asphalt shingle repair. Repairing your roof in a timely and diligent manner will ensure that you get a full lifecycle out of your initial investment.
Your roof repair will depend on what is wrong with the affected shingles. The universal truth that will apply to all roof repairs is that less is definitely not more. Don’t be afraid to apply roofing cement liberally. Use as many roofing nails as necessary to secure a shingled and if an entire roofing shingle is rotted or broken, it is always better to replace it than to repair it.
When you are planning your roof repair, it is important to remember that all roof fixes are easier in warmer weather so that the cement has a better chance to cure. Most of the time, it is not an unreasonable decision to wait until you experience some good weather. It is also safer for you!
If a shingle is cracked, you might not need to replace it. This would be the case if the crack is a hairline. You can easily brush on some roofing cement or asphalt paint that is specifically made for this purpose. You can also apply roofing cement with a caulking gun which is typically more expensive but is more convenient for your asphalt shingle repair project. Make sure the crack is completely filled and that you have created a good seal.
If you have a torn shingle, don’t pull the shingle free or displace the surrounding shingles. Slather on some roofing cement beneath the tear by lifting up the shingle. Once you have applied a generous amount, secure the shingle back down and apply roofing cement to the top of the tear and to the nails.
If you have a shingle that is curled, apply roofing cement beneath the curved section and press it into place. Secure with roofing nails and cover each nail with cement.
Some asphalt shingle repairs will require a professional. If a large area of your roof has been damaged, it is always a good idea to call in a trustworthy contractor who can give it to you straight. They should be able to let you know if your roof is worth rescuing or if it is more cost-effective to replace it.
When you are done with your asphalt shingle roof repairs, you will quickly find out that clean-up can be a bear. Roofing cement can create quite a mess on both yourself and your roof. To remove it, scrub your skin or other affected areas with a rag dipped in kerosene. Once done, wash your skin and discard the rag according to local ordinances.
Asphalt roofing is easy to fix and with a little bit of time and the right tools you can ensure that your roof keeps you protected from the elements and beautiful to onlookers.
